Examiner.com posted an article awhile back naming five good book adaptations to movies, and five lousy ones. Guess where “Twilight” ended up.
Lousy.
Do I agree? Well, no…because I don’t think it was a “lousy” adaptation. While I do think a better movie probably could’ve been made, Catherine Hardwicke’s version captured the overall feel of the book; the romance, the danger, and the humor. It was great to see all of that translated to the big screen.
I’ll be honest. I agree with what the article says in that short little snippet about “Twilight”, but not strongly enough to say that it “failed dismally” to capture Bella’s crush through her eyes.
However, I felt the romance between Edward & Bella was a little rushed in the movie and lacking in intensity. Their love story is why I was probably so swept away and so addicted to the books. It was the heart of the story, and it didn’t seem quite as developed in the movie.
Bella’s fascination with Edward was obvious, and you could sense Edward’s protectiveness over Bella, but it’s not so clear how they got to the “I would die for you” phase by the end of the movie.
And let’s not forget the meadow scene. In the movie you see the two of them lying on the grass (in awkward positions I might add) and to fans of the book, it’s just a small glimpse of such a major part in the book. Slightly disappointing. Was I the only one who felt this way?
It plays such a big role in the second book so I wonder if they will go back to the meadow in the “New Moon” movie.
I know, I know…Stephenie Meyer wrote a freakishly long book, and it’s hard to condense all of that into two hours.
Overall I was satisfied with how the “Twilight” movie turned out. And actually, I enjoy it more each time I see it. Of course as addicted as I am to the Twilight Saga, it’s hard not to like it.
So for what it’s worth, I say kudos to the whole team that made it happen (and I’m thankful they did!).
Would you put it in the “lousy” category? What are your thoughts?
