Twilight Music – Soundtrack Debuts at Number One on Billboard Album Sales

When Twilight came out in November 2008, no one knew how wildly successful it was going to be. I had doubts in my mind, and only hoped it could be as successful as the books.

Fans quickly squashed my thinking, as 164,700 copies of the Twilight soundtrack flew off the shelves in its first week. And that was just the soundtrack…

The movie hadn’t even come out yet, which showed that either the Twilight series was that good or maybe fans wanted anything with Rob Pattinson’s face on it :)

As fans flocked to the stores and the Internet to buy the Twilight soundtrack, it became number one on the Billboard album sales charts- a week before the movie came out.

That in itself was an amazing feat. Soundtracks don’t usually have those kinds of numbers, especially before a movie release. This hadn’t happened since 2002, when the movie 8 Mile came out.

8 Mile had a rap star that you may have heard of, Eminem. Everyone knows his music, and he was at the height of his career at that time.

But why did the Twilight soundtrack do so well?

It didn’t really have big name artists except Linkin Park. Perhaps it was a chance to hear Rob Pattinson crooning his first recording “Never Think” (track 10 on the soundtrack)?

Have a listen below and you be the judge:

Rob Pattinson’s “Never Think” and Iron & Wine’s “Flightless Bird, American Mouth” are arguably the strongest tracks on the album. They also provide background music for two of the more intimate moments in the movie between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen in the restaurant scene and the prom scene, respectively.

And of course there’s “Bella’s Lullaby*“, which so many Twifans were eagerly anticipating due to the fact that in the story Edward composes it for the love of his life, Bella.

What I love about soundtracks is that it allows you to discover artists you may have never come across, new or old, and turns you into a fan. The Twilight soundtrack is no exception. I look forward to what else Paramore, Muse, Iron & Wine and Rob Pattinson bring us in the future.
